The competitions winners were announced at NAWGfest 2023

2023 NAWG Members' Competitions

RESULTS

The announcement of winners in The NAWG Members’ Competitions took place on the Saturday evening of the online NAWGfest. It was a pity that trophies could not actually be presented to winners at the usual Gala Dinner, it is hoped that those who logged in enjoyed the anticipation and reveal. Margaret Morey (Northumbria WG) was the star of the evening having won three events. She took the Open Poetry prize for Organ Music, the Formal Poem (Rubaiyat) with Memorial and also won the Science & Nature award with When The Tide Turns.

The winners of the other categories were:

Short Story with included object (a glass / crystal ball / bowl): Karen Evans (Wombourne WG) with Kira and the River.

Historical Fiction: Jean Eaton (Words in Edgeways WG), Letters from a Soldier.

Ghost/Horror story: Robert Crockett (Hinckley Scribblers WG), Gifts from a Stranger.

SF & F: Mary Lowther (Wombourne WG), Dust Bowl.

Romantic fiction: Bernadette Walker (Hexham at the Abbey WG), Just in Time.

Comedy writing: Ray Offiah (Reading WG), The Souvenir.

“How to…” guide: James Edwards (Northumbria WG), How to Butcher a Language.

Memoir: Fiona Bernhoeft (Northumbria WG), Mind the Gap.

10 minute Play / Monologue: Hilary Feeney (Northumbria WG), Spit that’s Who.

The Denise Robertson Plate for the best Group Anthology was won by Hasting WG with Rough Diamonds.

The entry in the Children’s Writing competition was very small this year but the standard was high. Judge Steve Bowkett thought that the variety of poetry and prose and the age range of the entrant was so great that it was impossible to pick out a winner. All six entrants were Highly Commended and received certificates. They were:

Edie Perkins (The Crayon-eating Girl), Harry Cartwright (The Once-upon-a-time Machine), Olly Bond (The Five Senses of Winter), Ava Saffron Garrett (Travels of a Teacup), Raman John Cook (My Life), and Eli Nicholson (Kindness).

Winners of the main individual competitions received a book token. Runners-up and Highly Commended received a certificate posted out after the festival.

Finally the winners of the two competitions run during the festival were revealed. The 100 word flash fiction was won by Denny Jace (Wrekin WG) with Forest Fun, and the 5 line flash poem was won by Kerri Simpson (Northumbria WG) with The Moirologist.
