Round 8 prize winner is PJ Stephenson for 'After the Beep'
After the Beep
“Hello, this is Jim. I can’t come to the phone right now. Please leave a message after the beep and I’ll get back to you.”
You’ll pause, half inclined to speak, before swiping the red button on your smartphone.
You’ll call again in half an hour.
And again tomorrow.
Maybe, one day, you will leave a message after the beep.
But you did all your talking at the hospital, when he could no longer speak.
For now it’s enough just to hear his voice.
Before they erase it forever.
