The Aims of NAWG

The Association was launched in the summer of 1995 and already it has over 150 affiliated groups and over 100 associate (individual) members spread across the United Kingdom. The aims are to bring cohesion and fellowship to isolated writers’ groups and individuals, promoting the study and art of writing in all its aspects.

It has free entry competitions for members covering poetry, short stories, stage plays, journalistic articles and an award for the most promising novel. The top award for groups is the Denise Robertson Silver Trophy for the Best Group Anthology each year.

NAWG publishes a bi-monthly magazine, Link, and each affiliated group receives three free copies for distribution among its members. Associate members receive a personal copy. Individual group writers can, if they would like their own copy, subscribe too.

NAWG is an umbrella organisation listed in the "Voluntary Arts Network" and liaises with Arts Councils and regional Arts Boards; the Poetry Society; the South Bank Poetry Library; the National Poetry Foundation; the Arvon Foundation; and other organisations.

It provides an information service to enquirers such as where to find a local group and how to set up a new group from scratch.

Membership is open to all writers’ groups and individuals and they can join at any time of the year. The subscriptions run from the day of joining to the end of the corresponding month in the following year. There are no restrictions or qualifications. NAWG is non-political.

NAWG is the fastest-growing national organisation for writers’ groups in the United Kingdom. To join, simply fill in the application form application form and send it, together with cheque or postal order, to the address shown. Your membership pack will be despatched by return. You can also e-mail the Secretary, Diane Wilson, on nawg@tesco.net for further information.
