Salford Women Writers

Salford Women Writers meet every Wednesday at The Women's Centre, Langworthy Road, Salford (Tel. 0161 736 3844). Morning workshop is from 10.45am to 12.45pm; afternoon workshop from 1.45pm to 3.45pm. We have two excellent teachers, both are enthusiastic and inspiring. Each session starts with members reading homework from the previous week's exercise. No-one is forced to read. After coffee break, teachers give us writing exercises, then it's heads down trying to write, "off the top of the head."

Louise Jones, our morning teacher, recently won the Real Writers' area short story prize and is now short-listed for the national award. Afternoons, this term, has Sue-Ann Harding introducing us to different styles of writing, classical and modern. Listening to her read is such a pleasure. We could listen all day.

Both sessions are great fun. We laugh a lot. Our programmes cover all types of poetry, short stories and articles. Some members attend only one workshop, others both. Valuable criticism is given. The group has been involved with projects at The Lowry and give readings at various venues. Staff at the Centre are friendly and a reasonably priced hot or cold meal can be bought at the canteen.

Anyone wishing to join us, can phone the Centre for further details or just walk into any workshop.
