Research
. . . where to begin? You can of course, like Alice, "begin at
the beginning and go on to the end."
But that may not always be
the best way. Research is rather like detective work – piecing bits
of information together so that you can create the whole picture.
Searching for the
information you want can turn into a full-time job. But if you’re a
writer then do you want to be away from the writing business for too
long? Only you can decide where to draw the line and get back to the
serious task of putting words to paper.
It’s possible –
inevitable – that you will get side-tracked. Your natural
inquisitiveness and thirst for knowledge takes over. And so the only
thing to do is to give in to these urges. But don’t allow yourself
to stray too far from your intended aim, remember what facts you were
checking on in the first place.
Always keep a diary – a
journal of your sources. When and where you discovered your nugget of
gold. Because checking that nugget for accuracy is a must. Verify your
nugget with at least three other separate references if you can, that
way you can be reasonably sure your information is correct. If in
doubt, leave it out is the watchword for all researchers.
Devising a strategy may save
you time. Much information can be gathered from obvious sources such
as newspapers, library archives or surfing the internet. Even talking
to people, or visiting places connected with your subject can bring
that tiny piece of gold dust that you have been looking for.
The list is endless; each
person will find their own favourite information trail, and therefore
the best way to discover what he or she is searching for. Once your
special nugget has been found, remember to always, always write it up
in your own way. Copying other writers words is definitely a ‘no
-no.’
So, are you ready to delve
into the world of knowledge? To begin your detective work, arm
yourself with an endless supply of notebooks, pens and pencils and
prepare yourself to be transported into the unknown. Who knows what
you might find? The idea for a fantastic short story, an obscure fact
for a brilliant article, or the final piece of information to urge you
into writing that best seller you’ve always dreamed of.
When you have scanned the
horizon, sailed the seas, climbed the highest hills and are safely
back home don’t forget to check your own bookshelves and files. You
never know.
So whether you travel the
world by car, train or plane, or from the comfort of your favourite
armchair remember . . . above all research should be FUN.
